We'd like to clarify a very important point about the recently launched village scarecrow competition.
The point of bringing the competition forward (to now rather than early May) is to give families and those isolating at home alone something positive, constructive and fun to focus on in these uncertain times. We want to foster a spirit of togetherness at a time when we have no choice but to physically distance ourselves from one another.
For those of you not familiar with this pillar of village life, the scarecrow competition has taken place for a number of years and, under normal circumstances, culminates in a walking tour of the village. A map of all entries would be printed so villagers could seek out all entries and vote for their favourite via a ballot at the Post Office.
In the current climate and under the current government guidelines, encouraging such behaviour would be highly irresponsible.
Therefore this year, the competition will be online only.
There will be no walking tours, no physical maps, no fee to enter or to vote and no ballot box.
When you're ready, take a photo or two of your scarecrow, give him or her a name and email them to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. We will then post these images online.
By all means, please display your creation in your garden. Dog walkers, daily exercisers and those driving to the shops can and should enjoy your work without blocking the pavements.
On 2nd May an online ballot will go live and on 9th May we will announce the winner.
The prize will be delivered virtually for now and in person when it's socially responsible to do so.
We hope this message goes some away to putting minds at rest.
